Archaeologists and
collectors have been drawn to this part of Peru because of the beautiful
ceramics developed during the time of the Vicús Culture. The shape and
decorative features on these ceramics appear to be linked to the regional
cultures of Equator and Colombia. However, they also closely resemble the
Mochica ceramics, which links them to the cultures in Lambayeque and
Trujillo. After the Vicús, the Piura Culture was formed, whose last members
were known as Tallanes. During this stage cities developed such as Narihuslá.
The Inca Empire, with Túpac Yupanqui, began the conquest of this region.
During the conquest Pizarro arrived in this area looking for a place to
settle. He ended up living in the Tangarará Valley on the banks of the
Chira. It was there that he founded the first Spanish city in Peru, called
San Miguel.
In 1587, pirates burned and destroyed the port of Paita. In 1588 the
survivors returned to rebuild the city.
The department of Piura declared independence on January 4, 1821.
Farming is very popular in this area and the department of Piura has worked
hard to urbanize several areas.
Many important Peruvians come from Piura. Among them are: the painters Ignacio Merino and Luis Montero, the poet Carlos Augusto Salaverry, the father of Peruvian medicine José Cayetano Heredia, the author López Albújar and the hero of Angamos, Miguel Grau.
